Suffolk Safety Day Brings Powerful Learning to Ipswich Town Football Club

The Suffolk Safety Day, held at Ipswich Town Football Club, brought together industry professionals for an engaging and thought-provoking day focused on safety, wellbeing, and human behaviour.

The event explored how attitudes, decision-making, and mental wellbeing play a crucial role in safety at work and beyond. A recurring theme throughout the day was the Fit Scale, developed by Jason Anker, which examines how emotional and mental states influence how people react to situations. This concept was reinforced during the day, including through Sean Toon, who shared a powerful insight into his mental health journey, demonstrating the real-life impact of a person’s “F-it score”.

A particularly impactful session was delivered by Errol McKellar, who shared his personal experience with prostate cancer and highlighted the importance of early testing. His work focuses on improving access to testing kits and encouraging men to get checked, especially given that prostate cancer can develop with no visible symptoms.

Professor Tim Marsh delivered an engaging and often humorous session on the psychology of human behaviour, offering valuable insight into why people act the way they do and how this understanding can improve safety outcomes.

After lunch, Talk Shop, led by Rod and his team, delivered a highly interactive session that combined humour with meaningful learning, reinforcing key safety messages in a memorable and engaging way.

The afternoon continued with an emotional and powerful talk from Matt, who shared his lived experience on the 15-year anniversary of his life-changing accident. His story resonated strongly with attendees, offering an important reminder of the human impact behind safety decisions.

The day concluded on an uplifting note with Billy Schwer, whose high-energy session focused on resilience, purpose, and overcoming adversity. Drawing on his experiences as a world champion, Billy inspired attendees to live and work with passion, power, and purpose.

The Suffolk Safety Day provided a valuable opportunity for learning, reflection, and connection, leaving attendees inspired and better equipped to bring positive change into their workplaces.
